Long Live the Queen

Greeting the Queen at Amalienborg Castle
Queen Margrethe II

I’d have to say the Queen’s fortieth year on the throne should be the most important event of this week.  The last two days have been filled with special events throughout the city, and throughout the country.  We missed much of it because we were in the Temple for most of yesterday.

Though the sky was clear all day, there was a cold wind which brought the wind chill to below zero.  The sun sets at about 3:30 pm, which is just about the time we left the Temple.  We decided to watch the festivities on television.  The Danish news channels and CNN brought us up to date with images of what me missed.

It all began at Amalienborg Castle, then the Copenhagen City Hall and ended the day at the Symphony Hall.  Much of it was reminiscent of the festivities, which we experienced in 1967 when we participated in her engagement announcement and her carriage ride through town on her wedding day.

Last evening we watched the Red Carpet arrivals of the Danish dignitaries and Scandinavian Royals.  Denmark has the oldest continuous royal family on Earth.  There were enough tiaras, gowns and tuxes to satisfy the eye for decades.

The evening was filled with a variety of entertainment.  There was orchestral music, choral music, ballet, opera, folk music, comedians and historic film presentations; all paying tribute to the Queen’s past forty years.

It is Sunday today and there are celebrations underway throughout the country.  We will be satisfied to just know it is happening.
